Dean Yang is Professor of Economics and Public Policy at the University of Michigan, with appointments in the Department of Economics, the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, and the Population Studies Center at the Institute for Social Research. He is the Founding President of the International Development Economics Association (IDEA), the first global professional association for development economics. His research examines how households in developing countries overcome poverty, with a particular focus on international migration and remittances, alongside work on microfinance, health, disasters, religion, and political economy. Much of his research uses randomized controlled trials in field settings, while other work draws on natural experiments and novel data sources. His field research has spanned El Salvador, Guatemala, Indonesia, Malawi, Mozambique, and the Philippines, as well as Filipino migrants in Italy and the UAE, Indians in Qatar, and Salvadorans and Kenyans in the U.S. He served as Co-Editor of the Journal of Development Economics from 2023 to 2026. A native of the Philippines, he received his B.A. and Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University.
